A armed robber targeted a convenience store and was tackled by a shop assistant.

Police were called to the Spar in Blackrod just after 9.30am.

It is understood that the man armed with a meat cleaver and a knife entered the store and demanded money.

The man was tackled out of the store and the alarm was raised.

Police said there were no injuries reported and no items were stolen and have launched an appeal for information.

A staff member said: “It was at 9.30am, a lad came in with a knife and a meat cleaver, he went behind the counter.

“He was thrown out of the stop then they sounded the alarm.

“Police came to the scene.

“We were able to open again at around 2pm.

“It was just one person who fought him off.”

Police confirmed they had attended and were appealing for help in finding the person who was involved.

It is believed the man left the scene on a bike.

A police spokesperson said: “At around 9:30am this morning, 26 July 2023, officers were called to reports of a robbery on Black Horse Street in Blackrod, Bolton.

“An unknown male entered a business premises, reportedly armed with a bladed article, and demanded money. No money or items were stolen during the incident and fortunately no injuries were reported.

“Officers are now appealing for witnesses or anyone with information who might be able to assist with enquiries and ultimately lead to the arrest of the person responsible.

“The unknown male is said to have made off from the scene on a bicycle and has been described as wearing a black mask and all black clothes.

In March last year the store was subjected to an attempted ram raid.
