An inquest into the death of a Bolton man in a Spanish hotel has been adjourned for reports to be submitted by the Spanish authorities.
An inquest into the death of Jonathan Howard Scott, of Sharples Avenue, Bolton, opened on September 27, 2022.
It resumed this week.
Mr Scott died aged 35. He was found at his hotel room in Malaga with cuts on his wrist.
Area Coroner Professor Dr Alan Walsh explained to the court that he had requested a postmortem and toxicology report from Spain via the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, but that this can usually take some time.
He said: “Deaths that arise in a foreign country are often difficult in terms of the extent of information and the timeline.
“The Foreign and Commonwealth Office offered that the information from Spain was likely to take nine-12 months.
“If the family wanted to proceed, I would be able to proceed, because I do have the cause of death, but I believe the toxicology may be important, because it may have affected Jonathan’s judgement at the time he died.”
Bolton Coroners Court previously heard that emergency services desperately tried to save Mr Scott, but he was found dead on September 4, 2022.
Mr Walsh adjourned the inquest until November 24, 2023, to obtain more information on the toxicology report from Spain, but he said this could be brought forward if he receives information before then.
Mr Scott’s father Howard, agreed to wait for the toxicology report from Spain before resuming the inquest.
Mr Walsh also explained that the family could decide to continue the inquest in November without the toxicology report.
He said: “It is important for the family to have all the information.
“If I was in your position, I would want to want to wait for the toxicology.
“I am sorry for Jonathan’s death. It’s a parent’s worst nightmare to receive information, particularly when it comes from abroad, and particularly with unanswered questions.
“I am extremely sad for you and your family.”
