A major Bolton junction was closed after a suspected crash between a motorbike and an Uber taxi.

The crash is believed to have occurred at the four-way junction between Deansgate, Churchgate, Bradshawgate and Bank Street on Saturday afternoon.

Police attended and a cordon was put in place blocking traffic as officers dealt with the aftermath.

Cllr Rabiya Jiva, the council's cabinet member for stronger communities said: “We're aware of this incident in Bolton town centre and, unfortunately, accidents and emergencies are still all too common occurrences on our roads.

"My thoughts are with anyone who may have been effected and I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident to please help the police with their investigations.

"I would also urge everyone to please be careful when they get behind the wheel."

Two vehicles appear to have been involved in the crash, a red motorbike and a white Hyundai with Uber branding.

It is not yet clear how the crash between them came about with passersby saying that a collision had clearly taken place but not who had crashed into who.

One man passing by said: "I didn't the crash but we're just thinking how are we going to get round it now?"

Police and paramedics attended but firefighters at Bolton Central Fire Station confirmed that they had not been required.

The cordon appeared to have been put into place before 1.20pm, meaning that traffic was unable to pass through the busy junction.

People walking on foot were also unable to pass through while officers went about their investigations.

Earlier that day reports had been received about a police presence on nearby Great Moor Street, but it is not clear if the incidents were related.

Cllr Kevin Morris, in his role at the Crompton Place shopping centre, says he was in the area since earlier this morning and asked for security to check around Cheapside.

He said: "I'd seen reports of it and of course you then expect to see large numbers of police and to hear them coming in.

"So I buzzed for security to go and check but they've not seen anything around Cheapside or Great Moor Street."

He also urged anyone who had witnessed the suspected crash in the town centre to come forward and appealed for people to be mindful about public safety.

Greater Manchester Police has been approached for comment.
