A headteacher at a school in Bolton is swapping the classroom for the golf course after chalking up more than 30 years in the profession.
Ian Southern is retiring at the age of 59 from St Saviour CE Primary School in Ringley.
He has been headteacher for 16 years at the outstanding school.
With 37 years of experience in the profession, Mr Southern will be enjoyig playing golf and cricket, both of which he is a big fan of.
He said: “St Saviour is where my heart is.
“It’s been truly wonderful to be part of the Ringley and Stoneclough community.
“We’ve had lots of building work which has been a challenge but exciting for us and the children, and it has made the school fit for purpose.
“It now serves the community exactly how we wanted it to.”
"My time has been fantastic, and families have made my job very easy.
"I have had wonderful staff around me and amazing children who want to learn and be involved so much."
Ian will now be found playing more golf at the Bolton Golf Club in Lostock, as well as cricket and spending time with his family and friends.
He said: I am going to take some time off firstly going on holiday, playing cricket and golf, running because that is my passion, and watching a lot of sports.
"Everyone who knows me will know I am a massive sports fan and I try to bring it to every school I go to.
"I’ve been a golf club member for many years and might be able to play more now."
Mr Southern has brought cross country events to the schools he has taught at as well as music.
He will also be supporting the Leigh Leopards rugby team in his spare time at games and football team Leeds United.
Assistant headteacher, Anna Bowman said: “I have been lucky enough to work with Mr Southern for 22 years.
“Over the years I have witnessed just how inspiring he is to both children and adults.
“His passion for music, sport and education in general has shone though, throughout his entire career.
“He has touched so many lives and we are all going to miss him greatly. He leaves an amazing legacy that we will all be working hard to continue in his honour.”
Deputy headteacher, Joanathan Moorhouse will be taking his place from September.
