A planned expansion to a historic Grade II listed pub include a new veranda and covered terrace for diners and drinkers. Pub company Greene King have submitted plans this week for the Blundell Arms, which sits on high ground next to the moors on Chorley Old Road, Horwich.
The Blundell, previously known as the Moorgate Inn has origins from the 17th century. The interior includes remaining areas of wattle and daub infill, ceiling timbers and fireplaces.
The Grade II listed building also holds interest as the Blundell Arms was historically used as a courthouse in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was also used to host coroner’s inquests and the cellar has been used as a mortuary.
The planning application outlined the planned works to improve the building including a veranda and extended terrace. It said: “The principal aim of the proposed works is to provide improvement to the internal and external areas of the pub, through creation of a small expansion of the building to the north-west which includes a covered terrace area and landscaping works to enhance outdoor seating areas and support outdoor dining.
“The demand for quality outdoor seating for dining purposes has grown significantly following the Covid-19 pandemic. “The proposals to the listed building seeks to provide for enhanced facilities both internally and externally to support the long-term viability of the business.
“Ultimately, the proposed works seek to sustain the building within its optimum use as a public house. “There is need for additional seating provision externally to accommodate greater covers to support the viability of the business.
“In providing covered seating, this allows the area to be utilised all year round.”
The application said the work would include the erection of free-standing glass and metal veranda next to the existing modern extension.
The existing terrace to the south of the proposed veranda would be enlarged and bound by new stone piers and lanterns with improved flagstone paving towards a new southern entrance.
A new pathway with an archway, paving and landscaping to the north of the veranda is also proposed. Bolton Council will now consider the plans.
