More speed cameras could be installed on a busy Bolton road that has long been the scene of crashes and accidents.

The latest call for improved safety measures came after a crash involving two moving and two parked cars on Halliwell Road in the early hours of Saturday last weekend.

In the aftermath of the devastating crash, which left at least one driver with serious injuries, the area’s representatives say they have been encouraged to some extent by indications that additional cameras could be installed.

Cllr Kevin Morris said: "As ward councillors we are working hard and doing our upmost to deal with these serious and dangerous driving issues that keep occurring quite often on this busy road.

“Any further news and updates we receive from the relevant teams we are engaging with we will announce to all concerned local residents and drivers."

Last Saturday’s crash occurred at around 3 am when a car travelling down Halliwell Road crashed with another car turning right out of Draycott Street.

The area has now been cleared and has returned to normal, but concerns remain over safety in the area.

Halliwell Road has long been one of the busiest ways into Bolton town centre through the Astley Bridge and Halliwell areas with shops and community facilities lining much of the road.

It is also frequently used by children going to and from school and by older people.

Earlier this year Cllr Morris had been present at the launch of a petition by Halliwell resident Naz Vander calling for speed cameras at two separate locations across the road alongside his colleagues Cllr Rabiya Jiva and Cllr Safwaan Patel.

The petition was launched in print and online after a crash on Saturday January 28.

Now the campaigners are hoping that the latest incident will add renewed impetus to what they say is the need for something to be done.

So far they have been encouraged by the response from the authority, and say they are working with the highways department and the police to better understand the circumstances of the accident.

This, they hope, will help them try to prevent similar incidents in the future.
