An MP has called for more CCTV cameras after a number of cars were vandalised.

Bolton West MP Chris Green made the call after  a number of residents in Westhoughton reported their cars being targeted in the car park behind Aldi, and other car parks close by, including Pavilion Square.

In a letter, Mr Green says that residents shared their “growing concern” over the incidents, and he has asked for the Westhoughton Town Council to look into the possibility of CCTV systems in car parks.

In his letter he said: “I have spoken to local residents who have growing concern and want to see action to stop this from happening so frequently.

The Bolton News:

“CCTV not only helps to catch and prosecute criminals, it also acts as a deterrent to stop vandalism from happening.

“I would be grateful if the town council could look into the possibility of installing CCTV cameras in the car parks to stop the rise in vandalism.”

It has been highlighted by residents that some of the car parks do have CCTV, but not everywhere has coverage or complete coverage.

Westhoughton councillor, David Wilkinson says that the town council had “started the ball rolling” when it comes to improving and modernising CCTV in the area before the vandalism was highlighted.

He added that there are still a few variables being worked through before any benefits will be seen.

The Bolton News:

Cllr Wilkinson added: “A few months ago we started the ball rolling on replacing CCTV.

“We talked about covering bits of the town centre that were not covered.

“As technology has moved on, different technology, which is smaller and easier to install will be used.

“We will be looking at what we need to do next and how much it’s going to cost.”

Cllr Wilkinson says that through the scheme local councillors are hoping to expand coverage for King Street, Library Street, Pavilion Street, and other potential areas in the town centre.

He said: “We are trying to do this as quickly as possible, but it will take some time.

“When the vandalism happened, it was the first time we had any problems.”

In May of this year six youths were arrested in connection with the damaged vehicles.

Police say that have since been released on bail, and the case is still ongoing.

A Bolton Council said: "

A spokesperson for Bolton Council said:"The CCTV system in Westhoughton has been funded by the town council for several years and is monitored by EMERSON.

“That means the system, infrastructure and monitoring process fall outside of Bolton Council’s existing CCTV contract with NCP.

“Bolton Council has been approached about the possibility of upgrading the existing system in Westhoughton, but unfortunately we do not currently have funding available to support this request.”
