A “larger than life” company director who worked at one of Bolton’s best-known firms since his teen years will be laid to rest this week.
Bernard Waldron, who died at the age of 67 on June 14, worked with Bridgewater Avenue based MBDA for 47 years until his retirement in 2018.
His career, which culminated with his appointment as director of manufacturing, began as a pre-apprentice at the age of just 15 and saw some huge changes come into force.
A company statement said: “During his long career, Bernie had worked on many major projects in many countries, building strong working relationships and friendships, through his unique approach to teamwork, always with a great sense of fun and passion.
“Appointed Director of Manufacturing UK In 2001, he was immediately at the centre of many decisions that have shaped the business in the UK as we know it today.
“In particular, Bernie was the driving force behind the move from the old Lostock site to the current Bolton facility, securing the funding, planning and overseeing every stage of the build through to completion.”
Mr Waldron was made a Member of the British Empire in recognition of his work and in July 2017 was awarded an honorary doctorate in business administration from the University of Bolton.
The company said: “He was a larger-than-life character who made time for our younger community, championing apprenticeship schemes to ensure the business was always bringing in new talent.
“Undoubtedly, one of his proudest moments was Her Majesty the Queen awarding him an MBE for services to the defence industry, which will have included his promotion of young people in the industry and charitable undertakings.

“He always took the time to wear his medal proudly at every opportunity.
“He was truly a lively and charismatic character who will be dearly missed by his friends and colleagues.
“Our thoughts and condolences are with his family at this sad time.”
Mr Waldron’s funeral will take place later this week at Our Lady of Lourdes, Farnworth on Wednesday July 5 at 11am.
This will be followed by a ceremony at Overdale Crematorium at 1pm.
