A £10,000 grant made by the University of Bolton last year via the SheInspires Awards has paid for 500 nursing hours in Bolton Hospice for people with life-limiting illnesses.
The award was the first of its kind and made in honour of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The hospice was chosen by Dr Helen Wall, the first winner of the Women in Health and Medical Services’ category, who is also Chair of the Hospice’s Quality and Standards Committee.
The hospice’s Director of Income Generation and Communications Alice Atkinson commented: “We don’t often get gifts of this size so it was particularly welcome.
“This was especially so after lockdown and everything the pandemic meant because £4 million of the £5 million we need to run our services each year comes from fundraising.
“This kind of gift means that local people can get the kind of specialist nursing care that they really need and deserve.”
Professor George E Holmes DL, President and Vice Chancellor of the University stated: “We were delighted to be able to donate to a nominated charity and it was fantastic that Dr Wall chose Bolton Hospice, which provides the most vital service to the people of Bolton.
“We are proud that the University is woven into the fabric of the local community and we believe it is crucial to support the health sector which cares for that community.”
SheInspires Awards’ founder and organiser Gulnaz Brennan said: “These awards have been helping local charities since their inception.
“To date, we are very proud to have supported 16 local and regional charities through fundraising and connecting winners with charities to fulfil their commitment of giving back – an important part of the awards’ nomination process.
“Last year was exceptional and we are very grateful to the University of Bolton for donating the £10,000 given to Bolton Hospice – our Charity of the Year 2022.”
This year’s SheInspires Awards are to be held on Thursday, November 23 at the Bolton Stadium Hotel. For ticket details go to https://www.trybooking.com/uk/events/landing/35222?eid=35222&
