Bolton’s much trailed £5.7million flagship day care centre opened this week in a ceremony thronged with special guests.

The Jubilee Community Centre, developed on the former site of Firwood School on Crompton Way, will act as a support hub for people with disabilities and others from all across the town.

The ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by service users alongside council leader Cllr Nick Peel and Mayor of Bolton Cllr Mohammed Ayub with many other leading figures.

Cllr Peel said: “It was an honour to take part in the opening ceremony for the New Jubilee Centre which will make such a difference in the lives of service users and local residents.

“This facility was designed with the help of the users, to make sure it meets the needs of the community both now and well into the future.

“We want to support service users to live fulfilling, independent lives and this brand-new modern facility will play a huge role in helping achieve this goal.”

The newly opened centre, which will be operated by Bolton Cares, will predominantly support adults with learning disabilities.

It features a therapy pool, specialised therapy rooms and a café, acting as a replacement for the old Jubilee Centre on Tennyson Street.

A new pool will be available for community use.

Mr Baines said: “I am proud to be taking part in the official opening of the new Jubilee Centre.

"It is a fantastic facility for the people we support and a flagship resource for the town of Bolton.

“The centre is an excellent example of partnership working with Bolton Cares, Bolton Council, the people we support and their families and our external developers Robertsons.

“The project has been a culmination of four years hard work and together we have achieved so much.

“Well done to everyone involved.”

Work on the new centre began back in March of last year, with plans first submitted in June 2021.

The council took the decision to move the centre to the new Crompton Way location so that the old site would not be disrupted by building work.

Contractor Robertson Construction carried out the work on the centre through the council’s partnership with Clear Futures.

Managing director Dirk Pittaway said: “Having met some of the users throughout the build we fully understood the importance of the facility within the local community and during our day-to-day delivery of this quality facility the end users and the purpose of the building was never far from our thoughts.

“The Jubilee Centre is testament to the commitment shown by Bolton Council and Bolton Cares to promote life enhancement and wellbeing, not just for the users of the facility, but also for the staff who provide such an essential service.

“We are delighted to support the official opening and to have been the partner of choice for delivery.”

The old centre on will be handed over to the department for education for a new school to be built by 2024 to cope with increasing demand for spaces.
