The flag was raised in honour of the country's armed forces during a short service in Victoria Square.
Today marks the start of Armed Forces Week.
Veterans along with those serving gathered in Victoria Square for the service, during which a minute's silence was held and The Last Post was sounded.
Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Mohammed Ayub gave a short speech.
He was joined by Leader of Bolton Council, Cllr Nick Peel was in attendance along with many councillors including , Cllr Ryan Bamforth of the Horwich and Blackrod First Independents who served with the forces.
Cllr Martin Donaghy, who was at the service, said: "My view is that anyone who wears the King’s uniform and defends this country and overseas keeping the peace in various war zones, should be recognised and thanked for their service and continue to encourage them.
“Bolton is proud of our armed forces and has a very long history of connection with the armed forces going back years.”
The Armed forces flag was raised at the town hall.
Cllr Bamforth said: “Today we’ve raised the flag ready for the armed forces week.
“It’s important that we do these events to let our soldiers know that they are respected and loved, and the work and sacrifice they put in on a daily basis is a major achievement for what they do.
“These soldiers, airmen and sailors get up everyday and put their uniform on and they should not be forgotten or taken for granted.”
Cadets and many veterans were on the town square for the service dressed in their uniforms.
Veteran soldier, Ryan Yates was also on the square and his charity is one chosen by Mayor of Horwich, Cllr David Grant.

On Saturday, June 24, the annual Armed Forces Day event will take place on Victoria Square from 10.30am–3.30pm with a short service followed by a family fun day with lots of stalls and free activities such as BWFC Football stadia, Bolton Cadets on display, re-enactments, inflatables and more.
There will be military vehicles and weapons on display, supported by local 216 Bty Royal Artillery.
