Parks and playgrounds could be set to be revived and improved- with plans to bring a community centre back into use - across a Bolton district.

This has been made possible thanks to a new source of funding made available to the Kearsley area which representatives say can soon be used on several public spaces.

Cllr Debbie Newall, who represents the area on Bolton Council, says that after consulting with people living locally she has several green spaces in mind.

She said: “We’ve got some 106 funding which we’re using for parks around Kearsley.

“Hulme Road park needs improving and there’s one near the Hare and Hounds in Stoneclough that can also be improved.”

She added: “There’s also Kearsley Pocket Park off Moss Lane where the land is Bolton at Home but the equipment is Bolton Council owned which we’re looking at improving.”

The section 106 funding that Cllr Newall referred to refers to money supplied by developers towards providing community and social infrastructure like parks in this case or other useful facilities like sports centres or town hall improvements.

Council can support applications for 106 funding if the projects they have in mind take place in the same area as the developers are carrying out work.

The improvements to parks in Kearsley will come along side other recently announced works including the commissioning of nine new benches around the district and plans to revive and expand Kearsley Park Bowling Club on Thomas More Close.

There are also plans in motion to bring a long-mothballed community centre on Crompton Road in Prestolee back into use.

But as well as improvements to existing parks and play areas, Cllr Newall said that the authority may even consider new park areas in the future.

She said: “There’s an area off Lord Street that would do very nicely as a pocket park but that’s really more of a wish list thing at the moment so we’ll have to wait until I get more feedback from the officers.

“But when I have more details we’d be more than happy to share them.”

Cllr Newall said that she hopes to have more details about a possible work schedule soon.
