The BBC's Clive Myrie earned rave reviews as the presenter of  the most recent edition of Have I Got News For You  – but panellists joked he could lose his job over his wisecracks.

The Bolton-born newsreader and quizmaster read a range of racy lines over the course of the episode which was his fourth time as the presenter of the show.

Myrie, who was raised opposite Burnden Park and was schooled at Hayward School, was tasked to tackle a number of stories from the resignation of Boris Johnson to the death of Silvio Berlusconi.

But it was Mr Johnson's Resignation Honours which attracted some of the raciest lines, as the 58-year-old bantered about inclusions such as No 10 advisor Charlotte Owen and Tory MP Conor Burns.

"Anyone know why Boris Johnson might have given her one?" Myrie asked as a photo of Ms Owen appeared on the screen. "An honour is what I meant."

"Also receiving an honour is Tory MP Conor Burns who walked in on Boris in a compromising situation in the Foreign Office," Myrie added. "He is now to receive a knighthood so he is soon to adopt a similar position to the one he found Carrie in."

Panellists Iain Hislop and and Paul Merton, who were partnered with comedian Munya Chawawa and commentator Helen Lewis respectively, joked he could lose his job over these wisecracks.

Hislop said: "You'll remember you were there for the end of Clive Myrie's career."

Merton said: "Are you looking to move on from your current position at the BBC?"

But Myrie earned rave reviews on social media after the episode.

One Twitter user tweeted: "Clive Myrie is an absolute legend."

Another Twitter user tweeted: "I've been saying for years Clive Myrie is a national treasure."
