Fire crews worked through the night to tackle a blaze at a "derelict commercial building" on the Horwich Loco Industrial Estate.

Just before 7pm yesterday, Saturday, three fire engines from Horwich, Wigan and Atherton were sent to the incident on Railway Road, Horwich.

A hydraulic platform also arrived from Leigh in efforts to bring the fire under control.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) issued a warning to residents in the area on social media, urging them to keep their windows and doors closed as smoke billowed in the air.

Firefighters wore breathing apparatus and used two hose reels, two jets and a 13.5m ladder to extinguish the fire.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Crews were still in attendance this morning, Sunday, and a fire engine left the area at around 8.30am.

Speaking about the fire yesterday, one nearby resident, who noticed smoke, said: "The fire service came quickly and got it under control.

"They have been up on the roof with a crane dampening it."

This morning, GMFRS said firefighters had been in attendance for 13-and-a-half hours.

A spokesperson said: “At around 6.50pm on Saturday 17 June, GMFRS crews were called to reports of a fire on Railway Road, Horwich.

“Three fire engines from Horwich, Wigan and Atherton stations, alongside the hydraulic platform from Leigh, quickly attended the fire, which involved a derelict commercial building.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels, two jets and a 13.5m ladder to extinguish the fire.

“GMFRS crews are still at the scene dampening down the remaining hotspots.”
