A man has been sentenced after a "kind lady" was killed after being hit by a car on Christmas Day.

Lillian Conroy, 81, of Stonebeck Court, was crossing Newbrook Road, Over Hulton, at around 7pm, on December 25, 2021, when she collapsed in the middle of the road, before being struck by a car, an inquest hearing at Bolton Coroners Court was told.

Police arrived shortly afterwards and established that a driver had stopped to help Mrs Conroy after she collapsed.

But then a second vehicle struck Mrs Conroy while trying to overtake the first car,  an inquest hearing was told

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, Mrs Conroy died.

A man was arrested a short time later at his home address and was taken into custody for further questioning.

On Tuesday, May 31 last year, Paul Greenslade, 64, of Egerton Road, Bolton, was charged with failing to stop.

Greenslade denied the charge but was found guilty after a trial on Wednesday, May 3.

And yesterday, Thursday, he was sentenced at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates Court to 40 hours of community service and has eight points endorsed on his licence.

Following the sentencing, Mrs Conroy's family released a statement via Greater Manchester Police, which said: “Our mum Lillian was tragically taken from us on Christmas Day 2021.

"She was a mother, sister, mother-in-law, grandma, great grandma, aunty, sister-in-law, and a friend to many.

“Our family will never come to terms with our loss, mum was a kind lady who loved her family and liked nothing more than having us all around her.

“We take some comfort from knowing that she is now resting in peace with our dad who she missed dearly following his death eight and a half years ago."

The statement also expressed the family's "upset and disappointment" with the sentencing result and believe Greenslade should have received a stronger punishment.

The family also praised the police "for all they have done and for all their help and support over the last 18 months".
