Travellers have been seen having a barbecue three days after being ordered to leave by Bolton Council.

Caravans camped in Leverhulme Park on Monday afternoon.

At that time there were five caravans and around five other vehicles present.

Officers from Bolton Council visited on the afternoon of their arrival, carried out welfare checks, and then issues an order for the group to leave.

However some of the group began to leave and now there are three caravans and fewer other vehicles still in the park.

But this afternoon several members were seen enjoying a barbecue in the park.

The council confirmed most of the group had left and they would seek a court date if needed to ensure the removal of the remainder of the group.

The travellers have positions themselves in the northern part of the park, just across the road from homes on Long Lane.

After the group’s arrival concerns were raised.

Ward councillor Adele Warren said: Ward councillor Adele Warren also said she was aware of the issue and that a protocol would have to be followed.

She said: "As soon as they arrived at the park I was aware.

"I have reported it through the protocol that the council follows.

"It will go through the courts, it depends on their situation.

"It is always concerning when people are not able to access green spaces.

"I have not been made aware of any problems yet.”

Leverhulme Park is home to a community centre, an athletics track and borders Tonge Cemetery.

It is also home to the only parkrun in Bolton, which meets every Saturday at 9am for a 5k run around the park.

The travellers are currently situated away from where the parkrun course goes.

Last October travellers were present on Bury Road in The Haulgh for around a week and Bolton Council ordered them to leave.

And in March this year a group was seen on The Valley Car Park in Astley Bridge.
