A Ramsbottom pub, known for its history and popularity amongst locals and walkers, will be re-reopening this month.

The Shoulder of Mutton on Lumb Carr Road, Holcombe Village, will be opening on June 16 according to a signpost located just outside of the building.

Planned work at the pub began on May 18 in the hopes that the venue could be re-opened by early June.

After announcing that the pub will reopen this month, former customers shared their excitement about once again being able to sit outside and enjoy a pint or a Sunday dinner.

One Facebook user said: “It has been so sad to see this place be closed for so long. I can’t wait for my first pint!”

Another added: “It was once a fantastic pub and can be again, it has the character to be something sensational.”

The pub closed its doors in 2022, and thanked friends, regulars, staff and customers who supported them over the years however, the news hit hard for many locals who have missed the venue.

According to the pubs own website, the venue was built in 1751, had a ‘disorderly reputation’ and was associated with cockfighting, one of Holcombe’s old sporting traditions.

Officially the sport was stopped in 1859.

The Shoulder also housed the Old Holcombe Game Fowl Show, and hosted the New Year’s Day Meet of Hunt, an annual event taking place in Ramsbottom.

Although the exact work taking place at the pub has not been specified, there have been some concerns from former customers who hope it will remain a “country pub” and not be converted into a “themed or modern bar”.

A former customer added: “When I first started going in there it had flag floors, antique furniture, a lovely bar and an open fire, and that wasn't too long ago.

“I wish you good luck in your venture. A pub sadly missed.”
