New speed cameras are a step closer to be installed on a road that residents say has become notorious for road accidents.
This comes as a petition calling for the cameras on Halliwell Road attracted hundreds of signatures, exceeding its original target.
Campaigners now say they are ready to take the proposal to the next step.
Naz Vander, who set up the petition, said: “I wasn’t expecting so many people to come across an online petition but it really has given me a lot of confidence in the local community, not just in Halliwell but all over Bolton.”
“It shows that the majority of people really do care about road safety.”
Ms Vander set up the petition earlier this year in February after the latest in a series of road traffic collisions on Halliwell Road, one of which tragically left a man dead.
Her petition calls for cameras to be installed at the area around the Lloyds bank as well as further down on Halliwell Road.
The three councillors who represent the area have voiced their support and say they now hope to take the petition to the authority and see the proposals implemented.
Cllr Rabiya Jiva, who is also cabinet member for stronger communities, said: “We will continue priorities the road and make sure that is high on the agenda after the tragic loss that occurred.
“And we will continue to seek support from the community and the local authority for these measures.”
Cllr Safwaan Patel said: “It’s very important that we don’t lose the initiative on this, we need to keep the momentum going and keep the people of Halliwell safe.

“Because it’s a known hotspot and this could potentially save someone’s life.”
There are particular concerns about the area around Halliwell Road because of the large number of older people and school children who often walk through the area.
Cllr Kevin Morris said: “Myself, Rabiya and Safwaan will be more than happy to take this to a meeting of full council, because this is an issue of huge importance to people all across the community.”
The petition can still be found online at 38Degrees.
