Plans have been put forward to include “public art” at the site of one of the town's biggest developments.
The Bolton College of Medical Sciences (BCMS) is currently under construction of the site of Royal Bolton Hospital on Minerva Road, Farnworth.
The developers behind the scheme have now expanded on a proposal to include a “tableau” illustrating the heritage of the long-established hospital.
A statement said: “Given the extensive historical and cultural significant of the site upon which BCMS is being built, any proposal for public art needs to be designed and installed in context.
“As such, our proposal centres around the provision of a ‘timeline tableau’ which will be situated in the designated outdoor recreation, teaching and performance area, to the rear of the site.
“The location will be accessible to the public, with potential for hosting outdoor teaching, as well as performance art events, and acting as a general recreation and gathering space for hospital staff and visitors.
“The tableau will set out the timeline of the hospital site, with a focus on the impact of the site on the lives of local people.”
The £40m medical college is a collaboration between the University of Bolton alongside Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, Bolton College and the council, which when completed will aim to train around 3,000 learners a year.
Together the partnership hope that they can establish the borough as a major centre for training the next generation of medical professionals.
They will be also be drawing on university expertise when designing the tableau.
A statement said: “The tableau will be designed and produced by the University of Bolton Schools of Fine Art and Creative and Digital Media, forming part of a collaborative project.
“The same team recently produced a simple timeline for Bolton Parish Church.
“However, in order to ensure that the tableau has artistic merit, the project will be led by the University of Bolton’s Head of School for Fine Art.”

It added: “It should be noted that the cost of a public art installation will be made from the BCMS budget, which is a fixed and supported by LUF.
“As such, there are very limited funds to deliver a meaningful art installation, and we feel this proposal meets the brief in a way that also provides best value to the public purse.”
The public art plans were put before the council on Wednesday, May 24 with a determination deadline set for July 19 this year.
