A Bolton ukulele group is “bringing joy” to people across the town and region with its music.

UkesLikeUs was formed eight years ago and has grown substantially since with greater musical skills and a wider repertoire.

It has tutorial sessions with Bolton Music Service each Friday morning at Mere Hall with a qualified tutor and up to 20 people attending each week.

While the age range is mostly people in their 60s and 70s, there are also younger members as well as those in their 80s and 90s. The eldest member is 95 – “and he’s a real star!” stated Sylvia Swain from the group.

Members decided some years ago after receiving many requests to perform that they would go to a variety of organisations and raise money for charity. They are particularly busy around Christmas and this year’s charity is Fortalice.

As well as raising money the group has raised spirits, playing in many places including Thicketford Day Centre, Dunscar Golf Club, Clifton Community Group, Bolton Market and Bolton Market Place.

“We are amateurs with varying abilities, but we thoroughly enjoy doing it,” added Sylvia.

“We are bringing joy through music and song to our own members as well as to the people we perform to. We raise money and awareness for the charities we fundraise for, improve our music and singing skills and we also make new friends.”
