Real life superheroes paid a visit to a primary school.

Horwich police officers stopped by Chorley New Road Primary School as part of children's learning about 'everyday superheroes'.

Police Community Support Officer Pat Richardson was invited to the school to share information about the role of a PCSO to the Early Years children.

Headteacher Linda Burrows says that knowing there are trusted members in the community - whose work helps to keep children and adults safe - is an important life lesson for the younger children.

Miss Burrows said: “It is important that they understand who they can turn to when they are feeling unsafe or are in danger.

“At Chorley New Road Primary Academy, we believe it is imperative that children learn how to navigate life in modern Britain safely and with confidence.

The Bolton News:

“Visits from people representing different professions and vocations in our society are essential in our school as we aim to provide children with information about different roles and occupations to support them in developing their own aspirations and career paths, even in the youngest children in our school.”

During the visit the children learned about how to stay safe whilst out in the community, which focused on what to do if they are approached by a stranger.

The visit from the PCSO forms part of the school’s wider Personal, Social, Health and Emotional curriculum.

Miss Burrows says the school are now planning a trip to the local fire station to meet firefighters.

The Bolton News:

In the past children have also had visits from health care professionals such as a surgeon and a dental nurse.

The children were also able to wear the PCSO’s uniform and handle some of her policing equipment. The highlight of the visit for many children was seeing the police vehicle and listening to the sirens.

Miss Burrows said: “The children know the loud volume is necessary to alert people to the presence of the vehicle, which may be travelling at speed, in order to assist those who need help.

“The children loved the visit form PCSO Pat and were filled with awe and wonder as they listened to her speak about her role.

“We would like to thank PCSO Pat for her visit and would be interested in hearing from any other professionals, trades and vocations who would like to share what they do in our community.

“Looks like they had fun looking around the police car and testing the sirens and blue lights too.”
