A woman has died after falling from a bridge on the M61 near Bolton.
Police were called to the M61 bridge between junction 6 Horwich and junction 8, Chorley, at around 11am to a concern for welfare report.
A woman was on a bridge over the M61 and fell.
Emergency services pronounced her dead at the scene.
A spokesman for police said: “We were called at shortly after 11am to a report of a concern for welfare of a woman on a bridge over the M61 between Bolton and Chorley.
“Sadly, the woman fell from the bridge a short time later and despite the best efforts of emergency crews she was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries are ongoing.”
The M61 was closed in both directions since 11am to around 12.40pm.
Traffic was closed in both directions.
One witness said she saw three ambulance vehicles, three air ambulances and three police cars at the scene.
National Highways North West tweeted regarding the incident to let road users know the M61 was closed.
There was heavy traffic on the A6 as a result and diversions were in place between Blackrod and Chorley.
Cars were brought to a standstill, with people getting out of their cars, while the motorway was closed.
Details of the age of the woman have not been released.
