A councillor has spent his time getting people signed up for postal voting after it was revealed many people did not vote in the elections.

Labour Cllr Sean Fielding and Cllr Rob Morrisey are the newly elected councillors in Breightmet.

Since the election in Bolton, Labour have gone on to form a new council with Cllr Nick Peel as the leader.

Cllr Fielding and Cllr Morrisey were out and about in Breighmet after they revealed that 50 people did not vote due to ID laws.

The total number of people who did not vote in Greater Manchester is 3,881.

Cllr Fielding said: “A shocking 3,881 people were turned away from polling stations in Greater Manchester earlier this month.

“We encountered at least 50 in Breightmet who didn’t bother at all because of ID laws, so me and Rob Morrisey have been back to get them signed up for postal votes.”

Since winning the seats, both councillors have vowed to serve the people of their ward and are already listing concerns the public have been coming to them with.

Cllr Morrisey said: “Today me and Sean Fielding went out quite overdressed, on a postal vote drive.

“Shockingly it has recently been announced that 3,881 people across Greater Manchester couldn't vote in the local elections earlier this month because of the Tory's voter ID Scheme.

“We know at least 50 people across Breightmet fell victim to this and were not able to vote on the May 4.

“So, me and Sean went out today to get these people on postal votes and able to vote.

“We'll definitely bring sun cream out next time.”

The former leader of Oldham Council, Cllr Fielding made his political comeback by being being elected as a Labour councillor for Breightmet, where he now lives.

Labour took two seats from the Conservatives in the Rumworth ward and gained other seats from them in Astley Bridge, Hulton and Breightmet wards following the local elections.

Recently, Cllr Fielding spoke about the internet masts popping up in Breighmet and said he would be suggesting where they should be placed, if they cannot be stopped.
