An environmental campaigner is calling for quicker response rates to remove fly-tipping and education on recycling.

Following numerous fly-tipping instances in Bolton, well-known campaigner Alan Johnson is calling on the new Bolton Council administration to draw up a plan to reduce fly-tipping, introduce bigger bins and educate people on the correct way to recycle.

Bolton Council has got tough on those fly-tipping by taking them to court.

Alan, who is from the Deane area of Bolton, also said the charge for bulk waste collection should also be reviewed to discourage fly-tipping and the problem of rodents.

He said: “There are many more fly tips sites across Rumworth, residents have contacted me for help, they are sick and tired of living in these conditions, which are caused by a small minority.

“There has been a massive increase in rat population, people pay council tax and deserve a decent service, they should not be expected to live in such conditions.

“I run a litter picking team we go out every weekend trying to keep the streets clean in the area, we regularly report fly-tips to Bolton Council, but sometimes it takes weeks for the rubbish to be removed.”

One of the major sites of fly-tipping is at the site of Amir Khan’s wedding venue site, where on Back Deane Road, rubbish is tipped near a wall.

The bolton boxer and his Faryal Makhdoom spoke to The Bolton News previously about the constant fly-tipping outside the site, prompting several clean-ups.

Alan, said: “Can the council not reintroduce the bigger size bin grey bin for larger families if requested?

“Can they educate communities in correct recycling, and some households do not recycle properly?”

“The current charge for Council collection of bulk waste needs to be reviewed, with the charge being scrapped, or at least reduced to half.”

Cllr Abdul Atcha of the Rumworth ward, said he agreed with Alan’s concerns and would welcome changes.

He said: “We need more resources to tackle fly-tipping in the area.

“We’re working towards providing free of charge larger bins for bigger households.

“I’d like to see a stronger enforcement department and I will be working in the community to discourage people from throwing food out for birds as this feeds rats.

“I want to raise awareness on this.”
