The bassist of a legendary rock band has sadly died, aged 59, after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Andy Rourke of The Smiths has died, after a “lengthy illness” of pancreatic cancer, it has been announced.
Former Smiths guitarist, Johnny Marr, announced the death of his bandmate on Twitter this morning, Friday, May 19.
He said: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Andy Rourke after a lengthy illness with pancreatic cancer.
“Andy will be remembered as a kind and beautiful soul by those who knew him and as a supremely gifted musician by music fans.
“We request privacy at this sad time.”
A member of the band from close to their inception in 1982 until their breakup five years later, Rourke’s melodic approach to bass playing formed an important part of their sound.
As well as playing with the legendary Manchester band, he also collaborated with Morrissey, the Pretenders, Killing Joke and members of other Manchester bands such as the Stone Roses and Oasis.
