Later on, police worked with trading standards officers at Bolton Council to find illegal tobacco at two shops in Farnworth.

Police also arrested a man for being in possession of a knife while police were on patrol in Farnworth, and arrested a 54-year-old for burglary.

New leader of the council, Labour’s Nick Peel, joined officers on a patrol in Bolton town centre.

Bolton West MP Chris Green also welcomed the operation.

He said: “One of the aspects of being an MP is hearing people’s stories when carrying out my casework and meeting constituents at surgeries who have been victims of crime.

“This is why I’ve taken up my constituents concerns regarding crime with the Home Secretary and the local police to have more done to put criminals in their place.

“I am delighted and relieved to see that our new Chief of Police, Stephen Watson has listened and is cracking down on criminals.

“Operation Avro is targeting criminals across Bolton and is part of our plan to deter people from committing criminal acts in the first place.”
