Police have made more than 30 arrests in a "successful" day cracking down on crime in Bolton.

Greater Manchester Police's (GMP) Operation Avro came to the town to target a range of crimes such as drug-dealing, traffic offences, drugs anti-social behaviour.

The operation started early at 6.30am on Victoria Square, where officers assembled for a briefing before taking to the streets.

One of the first tasks was carrying out a raid on a house on Smethurst Lane in Bolton where they found a cannabis farm.

While conducting traffic offences, officers chased and arrested a man found he was in possession of a knife.

Superintendent Danny O’Neill of GMP’s Bolton District said: “We’ve made over 30 arrests so far today (Tuesday) and we may see this number rise as the day goes on.

“Operation Avro is a successful operation to do the police work we are trained to do.

“The officers want the public to feel safe and we will do our best with the information and intel we have to make the streets safer.

“I also want to encourage people to report things and to give us intel because in many cases we make arrests after gathering intel given to us by the public, so it does help us massively.”

After teaming up with the council’s trading standards officers, GMP found illegal tobacco at two shops in Farnworth.

Numerous cars were stopped on Higher Market Street in Farnworth as a large traffic operation was underway, with some drivers being forced to take the tints off their cars.

Others were stopped for not having insurance with cars being left there, and one man was arrested after being found to be drug-driving.

Chief Superintendent Stephanie Parker welcomed the return of Operation Avro to the borough.

She said: “Over the past 12 months we have listened to the community and we know that your concerns are around dangerous and speeding drivers, drugs, anti-social behaviour and serious violence.

“And please keep talking to us, we need to know what matters to you, and how we can make Bolton a safer and stronger community.”

GMP Chief Assistant Constable Wasim Choudhary added: "We've got officers from all across Bolton acting on intelligence that we've received."
