A business owner has bought the name of a cycle business after it closed its doors.
Owner of MK Cycles Ryan Phelan made the sad decision to close the shop on Tonge Moor Road last week after buying it in 2012.
The shop had become a staple in the Bolton cycling community after originally opening in 1976.
After finding out the news, owner of bicycle repair workshop, Cycle Surgeon, Rodger Sellers, says he wanted to continue the legacy of the name.
Rodger says that although there are no plans at the moment to open an MK Cycles shop, he would like to keep the name alive.
He said: “It’s a bit emotional for me because when MK Cycles opened in 1976, I just got into cycling, and they have been part of my cycling life for most of my life.
“I just want to keep it going because I don’t want the brand to disappear.
“We will incorporate the MK logo into what we do, after buying the MK Cycles name.”
He recalled the time when Mike Nortley owned the shop and says he was always “very good” to him.
He added: “I think the name deserves to carry on.
“It means a lot to me because it’s a big part of my cycling life until I started Cycle Surgeon in 2013.
“It was the only place I would go to for cycling parts.”
Rodger also says that he brought some of the stock which consists of tools that will be used in the workshop, which mainly deals with repairs and services, although bikes are sometimes able to be built.
Despite there being no plans to open a new MK shop, Rodger there is potential if the right space comes available.
He said: “If the right space came available, we would look at taking it on with the possibility of some retail.”
Ryan and his partner Laura made the decision to close the shop following the impact of Covid on the supply chain making it harder to get in stock, and wanting to spend more time together as a family.
