A walk is set to take place later this month to help raise awareness of a cancer charity's services.

The free event is also open to family and friends and is part of the Greater Manchester Walking Festival, aiming to raise awareness of Macmillan Cancer Support’s local services.

There will also be free refreshments available for everyone who has registered to do the "Macmillan Mile".

The Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Service is staging the one mile walk at Leverhulme Park, as part of Greater Manchester Walking Festival.

The event also aims to highlight the benefits of exercise before, during and after treatment for cancer.

People living with cancer are encouraged to bring along their carers, family and friends to walk the route.

And although the Macmillan Mile is not a fundraising event, people can still make donations to the fundraising team on the day.

Macmillan cancer information and support assistant, Jackie Wright, who has helped organise the event, said: “There is plenty of evidence to suggest that walking can help us both mentally and physically.

“We know that walking aids recovery while also being fun.”

The event is completely free and open to all ages and abilities.

The walk will take place from 10.30am on Saturday, May 20, followed by free refreshments for those who have registered.

Sue Summerfield, Macmillan Cancer information and Support Service manager, added: “The Macmillan Mile events also aims to raise awareness of the fantastic support that’s available from Macmillan for people living with cancer right across Bolton, not just in hospital or clinical settings but also in the local community.

“So why not come along to this family-friendly event and see for yourselves that whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.”
