An unintentional speed bump in the middle of a busy road will be 'removed' within days.

United Utilities has been carrying out investigative work in Chorley New Road, near to Markland Hill. But the repairs to the road fell below par, creating what motorists described as huge hump in the road.

Motorists reported that the hump was causing their cars to 'bounce' on the 40mph stretch.

Cllr Andy Morgan said the works had been undertaken by United Utilities and the highways officers at Bolton Council contacted the water company about it.

He said: “The road hasn’t been reinstated to the correct standard.

The Bolton News: Traffic queuing up at the roadworks

“The road was dug up because United Utilities were carrying out repairs, so highways officers have contacted them and directed them to come back and get it levelled off again.

“A few residents contacted me on social media saying it was like a speed hump and obviously you can’t have a speed hump on anything over 30mph and that stretch of road there is 40mph.

“Anything that is classed as a speed bump or obstruction shouldn’t be there, so it has got to be sorted out as quickly as possible.

“Residents were correct to contact us.”

United Utilities workers were back on the road today with work set to be completed by tomorrow.

Resident Henry Lisowski said:

"I was travelling along it on Friday, and I thought ‘blimey it’s like you’re taking off.

“The photographs don’t really do it justice to be honest, it’s when you’re driving over it that you really feel it.”

A spokesperson for United Utilities said: “We carried out an investigative dig on Chorley New Road last week following reports of a depression in the highway. There were no leaks or any issues with our assets, but unfortunately the reinstatement was not of the required standard.

“Our teams have returned to the site to correct this and will work as swiftly as possible to ensure the road can be reopened on Friday.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
