A major road was closed last night with police tape in place as officers attended an incident.

The cordon is believed to have been put in place in Farnworth late on Friday evening.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing officers on the scene at around 10.50pm between Gladstone Road and Carlton Street off Bolton Road, close to Farnworth Central Park.

A resident said: “I did hear something about that, but I’ve not seen anything.

“It’s Bolton Road though and it turns onto Gladstone Road.”

She said that she believed that the scene had cleared by this morning.

The location is also close to several of the town’s key buildings including Farnworth town hall and Farnworth Library.

Other witnesses reported that they had been unable to leave the area during what appeared to be a police incident.

Crews from Farnworth Fire Station confirmed that they were not called out to the area over the course of last night and the incident is believed to have been handled by police only.

Greater Manchester Police have been approached for further comment.
