Would-be female golfers are invited to an open day at The Bolton Golf Club on Sunday, May 14 to try their hand at the sport.
The well-known golf club on Chorley New Road is targeting women of all ages but especially those with children and little spare time.
There are free fun activities to get a feel for the game and learn more about the club’s women’s summer coaching programme.
Helen Johnson, WIG (Women in Golf) Charter champion there explained: “This fantastic sport isn’t the easiest to break into. The transition from hitting balls on the driving range to getting out on the golf course takes confidence, coaching support and, most of all, time.
“This is something that working women with young children find difficult to carve out but at The Bolton Golf Club we’re working hard to remove these blockers. Our commitment to this is captured in the WIG Charter which was endorsed by England Golf in March this year.”
Helen herself discovered golf at 50 – “and I’ve loved every minute of learning and playing,” she stated.
“There’s always a shot or a round that makes you feel amazing and you think, wow, did I just do that?
“I wish I had started playing earlier but bringing up two daughters on my own and working full-time would have made it difficult. I’m so keen to help other women enter the sport and I’m committed to trying to make it easier for them.”
Club chairman Richard Sutcliffe: “Beginners can get into golf at any age. So alongside our women’s coaching programme there’s a Girls Rock programme for young girls during the Summer holidays.”
Added Helen: “If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to get into golf then make 2023 your year to try. You can help to bring more diversity to the sport while boosting your own personal wellbeing and building lasting friendships.”
The May event is being run by Helen and club professional Matt Galley from 2pm when golf clubs will be provided. To attend, contact the club beforehand on 01204 843067.
