Bolton Library and Museum service celebrated Eid-al-Fitr this weekend with a host of fun-filled family activities.

The museum put on a range of family-friendly activities today (Saturday) to help bring the community together to learn about Eid, the celebration which marks the end of Ramadan.

Activities began at 11am, and included food, gifts and a fish feed as well as storytime for children to help them learn about Eid.

In addition to the free activities, children’s henna was available as well as the opportunity to take part in arts and crafts upstairs among the exhibits.

There was also an Eid-themed food trail to help children learn about special dishes eaten during celebrations across the world.

Activities also took place at Bolton Central Library at its new high street location in the Crompton Place Shopping Centre, which invited families and friends to challenge each other with board games.

The event was organised by engagement and programmes assistant at Bolton Museum, Shaheen Mogradia, who says it is a great way of sharing Eid alongside the community and encouraging Muslims and non-Muslims alike to learn more about the special event.

She said: “We put on the event because of how multi-cultural Bolton is, it’s important to educate people about what Eid is.

“It builds a sense of community and demystifies Eid.”

She explained that this year, Eid will be celebrated over two days as timings for the event follow the cycles of the moon which can vary between different countries. Eid begins after the new moon is sighted.

Shaheen continues: “In Bolton, some of the mosques are looking at the sky in Bolton.

“There’s always a little bit of not knowing what day it’s going to be.”
