A road was cordoned off after reports of a gas leak in Daubhill.
Emergency services were called to Derby Street at lunchtime.
Police shut part of the road.
The fire service said its crews were called to reports of a gas leak.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “Just before 12.30pm this afternoon (Wednesday 19th April), two engines from Bolton Central fire station were called to reports of a gas leak on Derby Street, Bolton.
“Crews arrived quickly at scene and worked to make the area safe. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatuses used dammit paste, a gas monitor and small tools to reduce the gas leak from a ruptured pipe and ventilate the property above the gas leak.
“Firefighters have been in attendance for around an hour and forty minutes and are still at the scene.”
A spokesperson from gas company Cadent, whose engineers were present on the scene, said: "There was a road traffic accident which caused damage to a gas pipe.
"As the gas emergency service, we were on site quickly and made everything safe. Our team are now repairing the damaged pipe.
"Incidents like this serve as a reminder that, if you ever smell gas or witness damage to a gas pipe, call the national gas emergency service immediately on 0800 111 999. All calls are recorded and may be monitored."
Traffic was diverted at Derby Street’s junction with University Way and Fletcher Street, with a cordon further up at its junction with Ramsbottom Street and Rothwell Street.
The cordon was seen to be lifted by police at just before 1.45pm.
Firefighters and engineers from gas company Cadent were working on a property on the street.
A small portion of pavement where they were working remained cordoned off.
