A Bolton housing association is warning people to remain vigilant after they received reports of bogus callers turning up at people’s homes.

Bolton at Home has issued advice and tips for residents to be safe and to protect themselves from bogus callers.

A spokesperson for Bolton at Home said: “We’ve had reports of bogus callers turning up at people’s homes.

“Be aware of the danger and know how to recognise and avoid doorstep criminals and scammers.

“Bogus callers - also known as doorstep fraudsters, rogue traders or distraction burglars - are individuals who pose as legitimate service providers to try and enter people’s homes.

“These criminals often use tactics such as falsely claiming to be from a utility company, charity, housing provider or council to gain trust and persuade people to let them in.

“Unfortunately, bogus callers can pose a serious threat to the safety and security of people and their homes.

“They often use their access to homes to steal money and valuables or commit other crimes such as identity theft and fraud.

“Sometimes, bogus callers can use intimidation or violence to get what they want.

“Please be aware of the danger and know how to recognise and avoid these criminals and scammers.”

Sharing advice on social media, Bolton at Home has provided the following tips:

• Ask for ID

• Be on your guard: to protect yourself from doorstep crime, keep your doors locked and check first who’s knocking by looking through a door viewer or window if you can.

• Don’t give out personal information to anyone who comes to your door uninvited.

• Be cautious of visitors offering you deals or discounts. It could be another trick to try and get into your home and never agree to anything without checking the legitimacy of an offer and person making it.

Residents can report bogus callers or anyone suspicious by phoning Bolton at Home on 01204 328008 or emailing safeguarding@boltonathome.org.uk, and Bolton at Home said they encourage people to contact the police as this can help prevent others from falling victim to these criminals.
