Bolton town centre parking space could be set to be used for a new car wash.

Plans have been submitted to Bolton Council to create the new facility that has until now been used as a car park on St George’s Road.

If approved, the proposal will see three of the parking spaces used for the new car wash.

The St George’s Road car park currently has spaces for a total of 18 vehicles with 15 set to remain if the car wash plans are approved.

Bolton Council described the proposal as a “change of use of car park to car wash together with associated works including the siting of a container and canopy.”

Planners estimate that two full time jobs will be created at the car wash along with a further three part time roles.

Parking spaces in Bolton, especially in the town centre, have long been a contentious issue in the borough, with some spaces having been listed for sell offs in recent months but others set aside for new car parks.

Last September, plans were announced to put car parks at All Saints Street East, All Saints Street West and land off Shifnall Street and Saville Street up for sale, which town hall officials said at the time they hoped would free up further space in the town centre for redevelopment.

But a new car park has been proposed at Moss Bank Park this year, with 47 spaces planned, in order to try and deal with what has been described as a “chaotic” parking situation.

In the case of St George’s Road, the plans were put before Bolton Council on Thursday March 30 this year and will be out for neighbourhood consultations until Monday April 24.

Many of the households on St George’s Road and nearby Chorley Street will be included in this consultation process.

Once the consultation period has passed the authority will then rule on whether or not to approve the plans at a later date.

A determination deadline is currently set for Thursday May 25 this year.
