A professional boxer and his girlfriend are preparing to take on an abseil challenge at the University of Bolton Stadium for a worthy cause.

Alex Murphy, a lifelong Wanderers fan, and his girlfriend Grace Bowker will complete the 59ft descent at 4pm on Saturday for Backup North West.

The cause has supported young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in the town for 30 years.

The abseiling will take place from the east side of the stadium and is an opportunity for brave individuals to raise money for charity will stepping out of their comfort zones.

Lightweight boxer Alex, 22, said: “I’ve never done it before but we are both really excited, although Grace is a little more nervous than me.

The Bolton News:

“But this is a good experience and will raise money for charity."

Alex and Grace, 21, wanted to participate in the charity sleepout organised by Bolton Wanderers in the Community (BWitC) but could not attend, and were looking for other things to do for charity.

Alex said: “Everyone we told has been supportive because it’s a good cause.

“People were asking if we would be nervous because of course it’s going to get you a little scared going down the side of a stadium.

“My mum wanted to do it as well and signed up but she got a wrist injury so she had to pull out, but she will come and watch.”

The boxer is a huge Wanderers fan, attending every game he can, including the Wembley win.

The Bolton News:

Alex said: “I’ve always been a Bolton fan so it’s good to be raising money for something they are doing with Back UP North West.

“It’s something I am passionate about, I’m close with them and understand what the BWitC charity does too.

“As a boxer, I’ve always had the support of the Bolton fans so I always want to support anything the club takes part in as well.”

It is not the first time Alex and Grace have raised money for charity, as they have raised money for Macmillan Cancer Support coffee groups in the past.

As a boxer, Alex thinks he may be slightly used to the adrenaline rush.

He said: “I might be used to the adrenaline but it’s still going to be completely different than what I am used to.

“I don’t know how I will feel until I get there but I’m still looking forward to doing it.”
