Speed enforcement on a road where a number of crashes have taken place is set to increase.
Ward councillor Andy Morgan said he would ask police to increase roadside speed checks on Chorley New Road as he plans to talk to highways officers about if any measures can be taken to make the road safer.
The most recent crash happened on Tuesday morning and left one man with potentially life-threatening injuries.
The cause of that crash is under investigation but has prompted calls to explore whether the road can be made safer. Police have appealed for witnesses and dash cam footage as part of their investigation into the collision and how it happened.
Cllr Morgan says he is trying to see if anything can be in terms of traffic measures, although he says due to it being a main route to Bolton, the idea is to keep traffic moving so careful consideration would have to be given.
He said: “We are unsure what we will be able to do because it is a main route, and we want to keep traffic moving to not cause congestion.
“But we are looking to see if there is something that can be done and take appropriate measures if needed.”
Cllr Morgan says that he has asked police to carry out more speed enforcement checks on the road, which has already taken place on Chorley Old Road.
He said: “We have been in contact with Greater Manchester Police and asked them to come to Chorley New Road to carry out speed checks.
“A lot more speed checking has been taking place and it has been done on Chorley Old Road.”
The most recent crash is one of a number of crashes on the road in recent months.
At the start of this month two men were taken to hospital after firefighters were forced to cut one man from one of the vehicles.
And in February two cars were described as being “totalled” following a crash between two cars.
Cllr Morgan says that it especially important that drivers adhere to the speed limits on the road when appropriate and to take extra care.
He said: “The overwhelming majority of the public do stick to the speed limit, and if everyone does and don’t overtake in the wrong places, then we will all be safer.”
