Disgusting sewage overflowed in well used park during the torrential rainfall over Easter Monday.
And the stink is being caused by a sewage overflow - despite United Utilies coming out to fix it.
Jane Wilcock, chair of Friends of Harwood and Longsight Park, reported sewage problems five times around the park since December to United Utilities, and despite engineers ‘fixing’ the sewage covers, the tank continues to overflow in heavy rain.
The group has worked hard and invested their own money into transforming the park into the well used beauty and wildlife spot it is now.
The leaking sewage covers are on Bradshaw Brook in the park, and another in Bolton Arboretum, bptj which were reported on separate occasions since Christmas and the new year.
Now, residents and Friends of Harwood and Longsight Park are calling for the sewage covers to be fixed.
Jane said: “There is massive disruption to the park occurring this summer to create two underground storm water tanks as the areas sewage system isn’t coping with the amount of sewage.
“We would like feedback on why the leaks are recurring and if, as we think, the tops need repair and why hasn’t it been done?
“United Utilities came out promptly and repaired in January, it shouldn’t be recurrent.
“Untreated sewage and wet wipes and sanitary products round the park is unhygienic and we want everyone to enjoy this area which is beautiful.”
The sewages overfill when there has been rain, and engineers from United Utilities have already been out to look at the issue again.
A United Utilities spokesperson, said: “We were made aware of an operational issue on our sewer network near Bradshaw Brook.
"Our teams quickly attended and fixed the issue and are now in the process of investigating the cause.
“We are also currently investing more than £30m in the sewer network in that area to reduce the number of times that storm overflows operate.”
But Jane says the issue needs to be looked at properly so it will not deter people from walking.
She said: “The one in the park is just oozing brown water.
“Would you want your child to go and play in a park that smelt like this?
“I’ve been reporting it since Christmas.
“We worked hard years planting and getting rid of Japanese knotweed, and now that we’re doing this work, why would it not all be done?”
