The sun shone as hundreds of people took part in the annual Good Friday hike at Rivington.

Spirits were high as they climbed to the Pike.

Everyone was in good spirits as they laughed and talked all the way up.

The Good Friday hike takes place every year where people from all around Bolton and Greater Manchester turn up to touch the corners of the pike for Easter.

Pauline Grady from Chorley said: “It’s just tradition to always come on a Good Friday.

The Bolton News:

“It’s quite easy and a nice walk really.

“It’s a lovely day as well, couldn’t be better.”

James Grove came with his family and said: "We've already done the hike and we come every year so it's easy. The kids love it but they have to get ice cream after it. That's also become tradition. The sun is out and that has made it a nice day."

After the walk, people  enjoyed the Easter stalls on display, as well as drinks, ice cream and butties.

Young children also joined the hike, with the promise of ice cream afterwards.

Lisa Smith brought her children, Alice and Elise Smith along with her.

She said: “It’s quite busy but the weather is nice.

“It’s a good walk with good views and we bring all the family, even the dog.”

Families also agreed that the event was well organise

Linda Bannister said: “They seem to be very organised this year.

The Bolton News:

“They have more tents and there’s ice cream at the top, so there is more to see and do.”

Jill and Stuart Ainsley chanced upon the hike as they travelled from Huddersfield on a motorbike ride.

Jill said: "We rode out on our motorcycle and we tour Europe usually, but this is nice for a first day out in the sunshine.

"We;re from here but moved out.

The Bolton News:

"We stick a pin in the map and if we haven't been there we'll go there so we chose Rivington because I had not been and Stuart used to come as a child."

This year the Pigeon Tower is open for people to step inside for a donation, which goes towards the upkeep of the historic terraced gardens.

Mary Unsworth travelled early in the morning for the hike. She said: "I did it this morning and it was great.

"Lovely weather and lovely day."
