An investigation is underway in Bury Town Centre after a ‘large’ fire damaged the rear of a bar early this morning.
Six fire crews were called to Silver Street, Bury, at around 4 am this morning after a bin compound at the rear of Stanley’s bar caught fire.
Firefighters described the flames as “licking up the back of the building, breaching the ground floor and first floor” and an investigation is underway to determine the cause.
Crews reported that several buildings in the area were heavily smoke logged after the incident, including House of Bridget, HSBC and a nearby café.
Watch Manager Ben McDermott said: “It was a pretty big fire to be honest.
“It looked to have been a bin compound at the rear of the premise but when we got there it was licking up the rear of the building and breaching the ground floor and first floor at the back of Stanley’s.
“There was heavy smoke logging in several of the buildings including Stanley’s, the House of Bridget, the HSBC bank and a neighbouring café.
“Because the rear of all those premises converge on one tight corner, the bin compound fire affected all of them.”
He added that a lot of the damage was kept to a minimum and it is mainly external.

He said: “Most of it was just external fire spread to the doors and windows but smoke from the fire breached the cluster of budlings.
“We managed to get on it really quickly, we went from three fire engines to six, used an ariel appliance, then scaled it back down to three units.”
Fire crews arrived at the scene at 4am, almost an hour after the bar’s closing time.
Silver Street was taped off to traffic until later in the morning.
A spokesperson from GMFRS said: "At around 4am this morning (Friday, 7th April), firefighters were called to reports of a fire at a commercial address on Market Street in Bury.
“Six fire engines from Bury, Whitefield, Heywood, Blackley, Bolton Central and Broughton fire stations, along with the turntable ladder from Bolton Central, the technical response unit from Ashton-under-Lyne and the command unit from Atherton fire stations quickly arrived at the scene.
“The fire involved a bin compound which firefighters extinguished using two hose reels. Firefighters remain at the scene alongside Greater Manchester Police while they work to make the area safe.”
