Community spirited folk were in for an extra treat when they were thanked for keeping the town they live in clean and tidy.

A Big Spring Clean Up took place recently with brought litter-pickers in the area together. Together with residents and councillors they collected bags of rubbish over three days.

And as well as a big thank you, Westhoughton Town Mayor Deirdre McGeown put her baking skills to good use to create a special cake.

The cake, which was created in the shape of the iconic Westhoughton cow.

It was then donated to the residents of Woodlands Care Home in the town as attendees at the event on April 1 said it was too nice to cut.

Cllr McGeown was joined by Deputy Town Mayor Ollie Younge on Sunday when she presented the cake.

Litter pickers attended a thank you event at St Bartholomew’s Church but had already eaten cupcakes made by Cllrs Linda Maher and Alison Jackson’s cupcakes, so they decided to save the cow cake for the residents of Woodlands Care Home.

Cllr McGeown said: “We had more cake than we needed so we thought it would be a nice idea to pop down to Woodlands with the cake and have a good old natter with the residents.

“They seemed thrilled to see us and the cake went down very well.”

Cllr David Wilkinson said: “A lot of people have been doing things in the local area for quite a while and the town council decided to host a thank you event after we received an email from Big Spring Clean Up saying more than 400,000 bags of rubbish had been collected and our 90 went towards it.

“So, we just said why don’t we thank people, and it wasn’t a big do it was just a cup of coffee and some cake.

“And hopefully now this can be a Westhoughton annual event, and we hope more people will come to it.

“Dierdre is pretty good at making cakes and she decided to make a cow cake for this occasion, and I thought it was pretty incredible.

“My colleagues, councillors Linda Maher and Alison Jackson, made little cupcakes and every time people saw Dierdre’s cake, they said isn’t that a lovely cake, it would be a shame to cut it so that’s why we didn’t cut the cake.

“We decided to donate it to the Woodlands just down the road which was also something nice for them too and the residents loved it.”
