A historic church which has been a place of worship for 170 years will host its last service on Easter Sunday.

The congregation at Chew Moor Methodist Church say that the decision to close was not made “lightly”, and that there have been “many tears”.

The church was built in 1856, extended in 1927 and in 1991 underwent a refurbishment inside.

During the final service there will be a chance for churchgoers to ‘reminisce’ and enjoy a selection of refreshments.

A statement posted on the noticeboard outside the church read: “The last service here will be held on Easter Sunday, April 9 at 2pm.

The Bolton News:

“Methodists have worshipped in Chew Moor since John Wesley passed through on his way to Westhoughton in 1785.

“This church building has been here since 1856 and was extended in 1927.

“All villagers will be welcome to this last service to celebrate.

“There will be refreshments afterwards and a chance to reminisce.”

Minister and Reverend Hilary Howarth added: “We hope people will join us to remember all that has been good about the church over the years.”

Rev Howarth said that the main reasons for the church closing is due to the impact of Covid, with many members not returning.

The congregation is very small, with an average of only 14 members.

During the last coffee morning last month childhood friends Joan Davis, Kathleen Aldred, John Leyland, and Pat Leyland shared their sadness after coming to the church for around 80 years.

John said: “It is sad, and it takes a while to accept it and let it sink in.

“For me, I think of the workers, the church, all the people I can remember from the past, all the memories, the workers and people who we have looked up to.”

Cllr David Wilkinson of Westhoughton South said: "It's very sad. I've been in Chew Moor Methodist Church many times over the years.

"Hopefully the building can be used to benefit the community."
