Concerns have been raised over the safety of a road in Harper Green following a crash.

Residents and councillors have voiced concerns over speeding and traffic problems on Lavender Road after a serious accident on Monday.

The cause of the crash is under investigation and is not yet known.

But it has prompted calls to make the road safer for pedestrians and vehicles.

People have said that the road is difficult to drive down, with parked cars on both sides at points, and that some drivers speed down it, using it as a "drag strip".

A resident of Lavender Road said: “The council put 20mph signs on the street.

“I used to be a fan of Santa Pod in Northamptonshire, the raceway and drag strip.

"I don’t have to go there anymore because this street is like a drag strip.

“It needs something, like a portable camera van. If they did that a few times, word would get around.”

Cllr Champak Mistry of Harper Green said: “Lavender Road has always been a road that’s busy, with buses coming from Bradford Road and cars parked on both sides of it at points.

“We’ve raised the issue, we’ve had traffic surveillance carried out, but I don’t think it’s an overnight problem to be solved.

“They’ve had a discussion with the police at a Police and Communities Together meeting, looking at ways of trying to give powers to the community to be able to police traffic with speed guns.”

He added: “Police would then prosecute the drivers who are caught.

“Whether that can be applied on Lavender Road is up to Greater Manchester Police.

“All three councillors in Harper Green have raised this issue over and over again at various meetings.”

Police were called to Lavender Road on Monday after a crash between a van and motorbike.

The motorcyclist suffered life-changing injuries.

The driver of the van was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving and has since been released on bail.
