Raw sewage overflowed on to a street and on to the paving outside the front doors of homes.
A blockage is being blamed for the disgusting overspill and residents are furious it took two days to clear up the mess.
Residents of Ennerdale House in Breightmet said they awoke to find raw sewage spilling onto the paving outside their front doors.
The sewage, which they said could be smelt from within the homes remained there until Tuesday afternoon.
Landlord Onward Homes said the clean-up operation began on Sunday.

Photos show sewage leaking out of a drain and running down towards the flats, and running onto people’s front doorsteps.
A spokesperson for Onward said: “We were first made aware of drainage problems at Ennerdale Gardens on Sunday 26th February.
"Our contractors carried out an inspection on the same day and provided a temporary solution before returning the next day with specialist equipment required to clear the area in full.
"During this visit, we cleaned the area, checked all inspection chambers to prevent further issues and cleared blockages from the whole street.
"We returned again on Tuesday to do a further clean of the affected area. We would like to apologise to residents for any inconvenience and distress that this may have caused.”
Speaking on Tuesday before it was cleaned, resident Lloyd Maloney said the sewage directly 'blocked' about six to eight flats and around six come really close to it.
“They had dozens of calls from multiple tenants," he said

Lloyd said: "It started in the early hours of Sunday morning.
“It was first reported to them at 3.30am – the smell of it had people wondering what was going on.
“No one has got outside taps so they can’t wash it away. Some people can only access their houses from steps that go down from the source of the sewage.”

Another resident, Gemma O’Gorman, said: “Everybody has been ringing up since Sunday.”
Pointing to a path which was covered in sewage, she said: “I’ve had to walk all the way around the estate to get my daughter to school. We would normally walk down there.”
