A fundraiser event is taking place this weekend to raise money for Turkey and Syria following the earthquake.

The Deane and Derby Cricket Social Club will be hosting a jam packed event with both outdoor and indoor activities, in a bid to raise money for victims of the Turkey and Syria earthquake.

A week on from the destructive earthquake and its 200 aftershocks, charities and community groups have been working to raise money to help provide shelter and food for those left without homes.

People can take part in climbing wall sessions, henna art, face painting and eat from various food and drink stalls at the cricket club.

Volunteer Nazeera Atcha said: “It’s a community project trying to get everybody out at the cricket club to raise money for a good cause.

“We’re happy to be part of this event to create awareness of what’s happening in Turkey and Syria.

“I have done charity work before including going out to Gaza and also worked with Bolton Hospice.

“It’s just about having empathy and helping all the people struggling in the affected places.”

Food stalls include a fresh barbeque and biryani among other South Asian cuisine.

Anyone is encouraged to attend and take in the beautiful view of the cricket club.

Nazeera said: “A lot of people have not been to the cricket club before so this will be a chance to see it.

“After Covid, the community was deflated, and this gave us community spirit.

“We want to help the cause as soon as possible and we can’t wait to see everyone here at the club.”

There will be a bike riding session for children as well as bike repairs.

The earthquake has hit parts of Turkey and Syria and caused a lot of damage to buildings.
