A man has died after being found in a lake in a park in Bolton.

Police have confirmed that a 67-year-old man has died after being found in the lake at Moses Gate Country Park.

A passer-by alerted the emergency services after spotting the man.

And despite desperate attempts to revive him by the emergency services, he was pronouced dead.

There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "GMP attended the scene at Moses Gate Country Park earlier today, where a 67-year-old man was found in the lake by a passer-by.

"Officers and colleagues from NWAS were on the scene within minutes but despite best efforts, he sadly couldn't be revived.

“There are believed to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. The next-of-kin have now been informed."

A cordon was set up by police and remained in place for throughout the afternoon and evening.

Officers could be seen inside a screen which had been set up near the lake in the park.

Speaking earlier in the afternoon, a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "A call came in at 1.45pm, it was confirmed as a concern for welfare of a man.

"Emergency services are still on scene, it is ongoing. It is at Moses Gate Country Park off Hall Lane in Bolton."

Earlier today, a GMFRS spokesperson said: “Just before 2pm this afternoon (Thursday 9th February), two fire engines from Farnworth fire station along with the Technical Response Unit from Leigh were called to Moses Gate Country Park, Bolton where there were reports of someone in the water.

"Crews arrived quickly at scene, where Greater Manchester Police are managing the incident.”

Members of local campaign group Save Rock Hall witnessed the man's body being pulled from the lake.

A post on their Facebook page read: "Two of our team are at the park and have very sadly just witnessed the police/paramedics recovering the body of a man out of the main lodge.

"We are extremely saddened about this and our thoughts are with his family and friends."
