Work to implement traffic calming measures on  what is said to be oneof Bolton's most dangerous junctions due to the number of accidents  is due to be carried out soon.

In June, The Bolton News reported that residents on the section of road which connects Bridgeman Street and Higher Swan Lane in Great Lever  were calling on the council to introduce measures to reduce the amount of car accidents there.

The section has been described by one resident as an “illegal Silverstone”, with current measures not preventing the high volume of crashes and leaving residents living in fear of what could happen.

Local councillors set about making the relevant enquiries at the time, and now it has been confirmed by a council spokesperson that work is “expected to be carried out by the end of March”.

“An intervention scheme has been agreed which includes a new road hump to slow traffic and the installation of a new matrix sign, which will display and monitor speeds,” he added.

The confirmation comes after a resident of Bridgeman Street, Nichola Hylton, wrote to the council to demand answers.

She says that she has had two cars written off which were parked outside her house – a situation familiar to several of her neighbours.

She said: “Living on the road makes you feel pretty uneasy. You can hear speeding car’s frequently, not knowing if they might crash into the front of our house.

“It’s been going on for over 30 years now with talk of change but no actual action.

“You have to basically run across the road so you don’t get hit.

“You hear shouting and beeping from people trying to push out of the four-way junction. It gets very congested.

“I worry about my car getting hit again or someone getting run over.”

All three Rumworth ward councillors say that they have been communicating with residents in order to find a solution and are happy that

“We have had some traffic calming measures approved and there will be speed bumps installed in the area.”

Cllr Ayyub Patel added: “These measures we have put in place will improve the safety of residents, pedestrians, and all road users.

Last year, the road was highlighted through research by CrashMap as one of many locations with a concentrated number of serious road traffic collisions.

Cllr Abdul Atcha agrees that there have been far too many accidents in the areas.

“Dangerous driving causing accidents in ongoing problem in Bolton,” he added.

However, Nichola is not completely satisfied with the council's solution.

She said: "The poor road layout and the congestion that incurs as a result is the root of the problem.

"It encourages accelerated speeds coming to and from the junction.

"A roundabout is what me and my neighbourhood suggest would be the solution."

Cllr Atcha has set up an online petition calling for a fixed speed camera in the area.
