The redevelopment of a key borough high street is set to continue apace with a betting shop set to be divided into a new e-cigarette store.

The shop is on Brackley Street, Farnworth, which is one of the town’s key shopping areas and central to the ongoing remaking of the area.

According to plans now given the go-ahead by the council, a betting shop will now be divided into two new separate units, one of which will be converted into a new e-cigarette shops.

A statement from the authority said: “The site is sustainably located within an existing urban area, with good access to services and public transport.

“The proposals are considered acceptable in principle, and in respect of the effects on the character and appearance of the existing building and area, living conditions of neighbouring occupiers, and highway safety and parking.”

The plans were first put before the council late last year on December 13 and were open for neighbourhood consultations until January 3 this year.

During that time, the authority confirmed that it has received no objections from anyone consulted or from anyone in the community.

The council says that the space’s intended new use as an e-cigarette shop is "in keeping" with the other retail and commercial uses for similar shops in the town centre.

A statement said: “The site lies within Farnworth town centre and is surrounded by predominantly retail and commercial uses, with some residential uses.

“To the front of the site is the pedestrianised retail frontage and to the rear is a car park.”

The move comes amid major changes for Farnworth town centre, with the area around the market precinct in the process of being transformed into a new hub for housing, businesses, and leisure.

The £13m project is one of the most significant Bolton has seen in many years and aims to transform Farnworth into a desirable living space for people working across Greater Manchester.

This will include plans for new cafes, bars and the creation of a new community and civic hub.

Redevelopment work got underway between King Street and Brackley Street last December.
