Wigan Road: Emergency services called to crash

Emergency services were called to the junction of Wigan Road and Bolton Road, Hunger Hill after teh two vehicle smash.

Two people were assessed by paramedics before being taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “At approximately 11.20pm on Saturday, 4th February, firefighters were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Bolton Road, at the junction with Wigan Road, in Bolton. 

“One fire engine from Bolton station quickly attended the scene. The collision involved two vehicles.

“Two casualties were assessed by colleagues from NWAS before being conveyed to hospital. Fire crews worked to make the scene safe and were in attendance for around 20 minutes.”

The cause of the crash has is not known but residents say there have been a number of incidents on the road near that junction..

Kevin Burns, aged 75, who lives near to the junction, said: “We were just going to bed when we heard this bang.

“It was backed up here, people had stopped to help. There was a fire engine. That tuft of grass is where one of the cars was.”

Another resident said: “There were police, ambulance and fire services. We could hear machinery so (I) think someone was being cut from a car.

“There was a white car with visible damage from impact to the front.

“This corner and junction here is lethal. Cars fly round from the motorway slip road. There have been many accidents and a few years ago kids were air lifted to hospital after being run over.”

Another resident said: “There was a white car, the windscreen was completely done in and its airbags had gone.

“There were a few ambulances and a couple of police cars.

"I think it should be a 30 (limit) road."

Another resident said: “We heard a big crash. There was a recovery truck and I think they cut them our of the car because we heard the machinery."

They added “People come off the motorway and not really pay any attention to the fact it’s a residential area.

“And for kids crossing the road, my son is at school and has to cross Wigan Road to catch the bus, people do drive fast.”

Another resident said: “I was just going to bed and saw the blue flashing lights and saw the car.

“Children cross the road, it’s very dangerous. There’s only one shop in the area, on Bolton Road, and they have to cross the road to get to it.”
